Tom’s Studio #60 Pigment Black
The Review Page
This picture was taken after the water test. Pretty impressive.
Tom’s Studio Pigment Black has that shine that you get with pigmented inks so it’s not the very darkest black when you shine a light on it. That’s something I like in a black ink, as it makes it a little more interesting. It’s also got a nice flow, and it didn’t even clog this Lamy 2000 EF nib when I left it in a drawer for a long while. And the waterproofing is great. These pictures were taken after my water test in the YouTube video, and it doesn’t look like anything has moved at all.
The caveat is that you don’t really want to let a pigmented ink dry out in your pen. They can be cleaned out when they dry, but they can be a bit harder to deal with. An ultrasonic cleaner can be really helpful in those situations to knock the particles loose.
Writing Samples & Papers
Look at the shine on this paper. Cosmo Air Snow is a bright white paper related to Cosmo Air Light. I like it more than CAL, as it’s not as squishy and odd, but it does make lots of inks look good. I think there’s a hair from our cat Stripes on the bottom right. That’s a bonus. No extra charge.
It’s pretty solid on this copy paper, with nary a feather or spread to be found.
It does bleed a little bit, but so do most inks on this paper.
This sample is in an old-school Tomoe River journal.
Color Comparisons
Here are a whole bunch of different black inks compared to the Pigment Black swatch. Some of these are pretty close, and others are darker or sheenier. There is more variation amongst black inks than most would think, so pick your favorites!
